Mould and a Hole

A discoloured ink on paper work with mould spotting and a hole through the sheet, lifted off its old silk backing, cleaned, patched and remounted.

Condition

Discolouration and mould spotting across the sheet, and a hole straight through it. A loss like that changes the job: spotting is a cleaning problem, but a hole is a structural one, and the paper immediately around it is usually weaker than it looks.

The work was on an old silk backing that had reached the end of its life.

What we did

Treatment

The work was removed from the old backing and cleaned, then the hole patched from the reverse with matching fibre so the repair supports the sheet without reading from the front.

It was then remounted onto a fresh backing, which is what carries the repaired area afterwards.

Outcome

The sheet is whole, clean and flat. The five before and after pairs are worth stepping through, since the repair is easier to find in the before images than in the after.
