Yellowing and mould, remounted as a scroll

Flowers in Ink

A traditional floral composition yellowed and spotted with mould across the full surface, cleaned and remounted onto a fresh backing in scroll format.

Condition

Yellowing across the whole sheet, with mould spotting through it. Both had come on gradually, which is the awkward part: a work that discolours over decades looks normal to whoever lives with it, and the loss only becomes obvious once it sits beside a clean sheet.

What we did

Treatment

The work was cleaned to lift the discolouration and the spotting together, then remounted onto a fresh backing and returned in scroll format.

Remounting as a scroll rather than flat suits a work that will be rolled and stored between showings, which is how a piece like this is usually kept.

The finished work

Outcome

The ground has come back close to its original state and the flowers read against white rather than against a yellow cast.
